Elroy Strom

Obituary of Elroy Alfred Strom

Elroy “Roy” Alfred Strom, age 90, of Duluth passed away peacefully with family by his side, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth on Sept. 2, 2019

Born March 25, 1929 to Toni (Medelbo) and Alfred Strom in Duluth, MN.

Soon after graduating from Denfeld High School in 1947, Roy started dating Marcy. He was drafted into the Army and was trained in sharp shooting and cryptography. He was sent to fight in Korea on the front lines for 17 months. Many poker games resulted in Roy sending the winnings home to Marcy to save for their future together. When he did return home, he didn’t know what he should do for the rest of his life. He attended the U of M Duluth for a short time and decided to go to work at Wallner Welding. He eventually owned the company. He and Marcy married in 1951. They spent 52 happy years together. Traveling was a passion they both shared. They loved to cook and he raised beautiful roses. When Marcy got sick, Roy sold the company and concentrated on being with her. They still traveled as often as they could, many times to Canada. He loved playing cards and jigsaw puzzles. There was always a puzzle sitting out on a table. He was an avid trap shooter.

Roy was a member to the Kitchee Gumee Club of Duluth, Scottish Rite, the Masons Ionic Lodge, Animal Allies and NRA.

Roy is preceded in death by his mother and father, Toni and Al; and wife, Marcella.

He will be dearly remembered and missed by nephew, Steve (Cindy) Carey, niece, Kris (Jim) Swoboda, niece, Anne Donahoe, niece, Sue Kyllonen (Audrey), nephew, David (Moe) Kyllonen, niece, Jane (Jon) Martinson; great nieces and great nephews and friends.
