Obituary of Roy Hjalmer Mattson
Roy Hjalmer Mattson, 99, of Duluth passed away peacefully with his son by his side Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay. He was born February 15, 1920 to John and Ann Mattson in Ashland, WI.
Roy graduated from Ashland High School and soon moved to California, where he worked for Lockhead Aircraft for many years. On May 26, 1942 he married the love of his life, Helen Mogensen. Roy served his country during WWII in the Army Air Corps and was assigned to the 389th bombardment group, 565th Strategic Missile Squadron. Roy was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and air medals, along with many other medals. After serving his country Roy worked as a dairy farmer and in construction until his retirement.
He was a past president of the Duluth Lions Club and was a longtime member of the Scottish Rite, Masons, and the Shriners in Duluth. Roy loved to spend time fishing and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen.
Roy is survived by his two children, Donald (Merry) Mattson of Duluth and Darline Winterton of Heber City, UT; three grandsons, John, Tom, and Joe; and one great-grandson, Samuel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Knife River Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 10:00 until the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Knife River Lutheran Church, Knife River, MN. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Ashland the following day.
