Some of our fondest memories I have are of Grandpa John taking me and my sister to Chilly Billy's for ice cream he didn't care how many toppings we put on our ice cream. Also how happy he was watching us at our softball games. He was one of our biggest cheer leaders! We were lucky enough to have him at our last game of the season last Wednesday night. We love and miss him. Love you Grandpa! Love, Emily & Kaitlyn

I've known John since seventh grade at Lincoln Junior High School in Duluth in the early 1950s. Never close, we were always cordial in our sporadic meetings in the intervening years. My condolences to his family. I just want to note that he was the finest natural athlete I have ever known. He broke every city-wide record in track events when we were in ninth grade. I wouldn't be surprised if he still holds those records. Fellow students used to gather on lunch hour during track season just to watch him practice the pole vault. Incredible athlete. Very sorry to hear of his passing.
